Biology & Microbiology

Careers: in Health care (medical and laboratory technicians), Food manufacturing, Pharmaceuticals, Cosmetics, Scientific journalism, Chemical manufacturing.

  • BSc(Hons) Biological Sciences, University of Central Lancashire. Study of the human body in both the healthy and malfunctioning states, understanding of the interactions of medicines in human physiological systems and an in-depth journey into the realms of molecular biology of the cell.
  • Bachelor of Environmental Biology, Canterbury Christ Church University. Study of the interaction between biology, ecology and the planetary environment. It strongly emphasises biosciences but also provides a background in the physical sciences necessary to monitor and understand the whole subject.
  • HNC in Applied Biology, Canterbury Christ Church University. Taught at Thanet College. Successful completion allows for the opportunity to progress to study at university on Biology related degree programmes.
  • BSc Biological Science + Year Abroad or Internship, University of Essex. Flexible degree with the chance to specialize in the second and third years on the areas in biology that interest you the most.
  • BSc Marine Biology + Year Abroad, University of Essex. 3 or 4 years. This course gives you a detailed understanding of marine and freshwater biodiversity and ecology with the chance to specialize by choosing modules. Exciting option to study abroad for 1 year.
  • BSc Genetics + Year Abroad or Internship, University of Essex. The study of genetics includes understanding how genes are passed from one generation to the next, how DNA works and the effect of variation and natural selection. Your course teaches you about the genetics of populations, biodiversity, human health and cloning, with a strong emphasis on molecular and cellular aspects.

Biosciences

Careers: in Cancer research, Research laboratory management, Conservation management, Pharmaceutical industry, Public health laboratories, Analytical laboratories.

  • BSc Biosciences, Canterbury Christ Church University. Individual modules place emphasis on transferable skills in oral and written communication, information technology and the use of statistics as well as specialist subject skills and knowledge.
  • BSc (Hons) Human Biosciences, Coventry University. How the human body functions in health and disease at the tissue, cell and molecular level. This varied and interesting degree course covers a wide range of biology-based knowledge, laboratory and other practical skills.

Biochemistry and Biomedical Science

Careers: Research laboratory management in the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Industries, Hospitals, Clinics and Healthcare Companies.

  • BSc Biochemistry + Year Abroad or Internship, University of Essex. This 3 or 4 year degree develops understanding of the molecular principles that underlie biochemical reactions and processes, including advancing areas like bioenergetics and enzymology.
  • BSc Biomedical Science + Year Abroad, University of Essex. This program uses a disease-based approach to the study of the bio molecular foundations of medicine, and includes specialised modules concerning the application of biomedical sciences. The skills you will learn are at the forefront of advances in medical research, including clinical biochemistry, biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry, forensic science, veterinary science, health and safety and food science.

Chemistry

Careers: in Forensics, Chemicals industry.

  • BSc(Hons) Chemistry, University of Central Lancashire. The key elements of Physical, Inorganic, Organic and Analytical Chemistry are strongly underpinned by laboratory classes.
  • BSc(Hons) Forensic Chemistry, University of Central Lancashire. The nature of chemical evidence encountered is diverse and may include drugs of abuse, accelerants, fibres, paints and pigments to name but a few, therefore a good background in chemistry and its associated analytical techniques is imperative.

Nuclear

  • HNC Engineering (Nuclear) (2 years), University of Central Lancashire. Identification, analysis, evaluation and subsequent solving of problems associated with manufacture and process engineering, setting those activities within a business context
  • FdEng Engineering (Nuclear) (2 years), University of Central Lancashire. A professional development module in the second half of the course places emphasis on applying the fundamentals learnt throughout the course, and setting the work in a nuclear context.

Oil & Gas

Careers: Technicians in the Energy and Hydrocarbon industry.
