6th century, it is believed the first university in Britain was founded by Saint Illtud near Glamorgan. Today Wales has 30 centres of excellence, 91 departments rated 4 star and above for research and 66 departments listed as excellent for teaching quality. The level of support given to international students is top class; universities offer free English language courses and help for funding studies.   

To cap this, students are happy! Aberystwyth has been voted best university town in Britain and Swansea University has won an award for being the best student experience in the UK.

Postgraduate in Wales

Qualifications and duration.

  • Master Degree. 1 or 2 years.
  • Doctoral studies. 3 years, depending on program and method.

Tuition fees.

  • Graduate UK and EU tuition fees are in the £4,500 range with the exception of professional courses which are more expensive.
  • Graduate International and non-EU tuition fees range from £10,500 to £11,500 for courses with the exception of professional courses.

Where will I live?

  • Most universities guarantee accommodation for all new students. In 2010/2011 prices ranged from £70 to £110/week. See, for example, Cardiff University accommodation.

A number of universities, colleges and schools have come together to form the Learn English in Wales Group in order to offer a range of English language courses for EU and international students at all levels, from Pre-University to Executive.

Check out the best transport links. If your destination is Cardiff, you might want to fly into Cardiff or Bristol. Aberystwyth in the centre is reachable by bus or train and well worth the trip. Bangor in the north is probably best from Liverpool or Manchester. What a pleasant way to visit this lovely country.
